Import Your Mailchimp List
If your newsletter list lives in Mailchimp, you can move it to Passtastic. Contacts who are subscribed in Mailchimp can then get your emails from Passtastic. This works like Import Your Existing Customers, with an extra step for the Mailchimp status.
Export from Mailchimp
In Mailchimp, export each list status as its own file (Audience, then Export). You will have one file for each of Subscribed, Unsubscribed and Cleaned. You upload them one at a time. A file can hold up to 10,000 rows.
Import a file
1. Open Customers and click Import Customers.
2. Under Where is your list from? choose From Mailchimp.
3. Choose the program and upload the file.
4. Under Which Mailchimp list is this file? choose Subscribed, Unsubscribed or Cleaned.
5. Check the matched columns. Mailchimp's names, like Email Address and First Name, are recognized.
6. Tick the box saying this is your own unchanged Mailchimp export, and import. Keep the export: you may need to show when and how these contacts agreed.
What each file does
- Subscribed: these contacts can get your emails.
- Unsubscribed: kept in your customers, but never emailed. They are opted out on every card, including customers you already have.
- Cleaned: same as unsubscribed. Mailchimp cleaned these addresses because they stopped working, so they are never emailed.
Before you import you see the counts: "[n] subscribed · [n] unsubscribed · [n] cleaned". Rows without a Mailchimp status are imported without email consent.
People who weren't customers yet are added without a card. You can invite them to install it later.
Notes
- Single opt-in: if some contacts subscribed without confirming their email in Mailchimp, you see "[n] contacts subscribed without confirming their email in Mailchimp." They are still imported, so check that you are happy with how they signed up.
- Peru: Peru requires proof of each contact's earlier consent. You are responsible for that proof, so keep your Mailchimp export.
- Colombia: before you import, check your contacts against Colombia's "No molestar" register (RNE).
- Free trial: you can email imported contacts after your first payment.
The ordinary CSV import
Importing a CSV or Excel file does not sign anyone up for your newsletters. The column OK to email the card invitation only covers the email that invites them to install their card. Those customers can say yes to newsletters themselves; see Growing Your Email List.
