Sell and Send Gifts

Some of your customers want to give your card to someone else: a birthday coffee bundle, store credit for a friend, a membership for a partner. Gifts let them do exactly that, and the person who receives it gets a card in their own Apple or Google Wallet.

What your customers can do

A customer can buy a bundle, store credit or, at your counter, a membership for someone else. They write a message, choose Send now or On a date, and we do the rest.

The person receives an email from your business. The email keeps the surprise: it does not show the value or the message. They open an envelope on the gift page, with your logo as the wax seal, and only then see what they got and the message. From there they add the card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.

The buyer gets a receipt and, later, an email telling them the gift was opened. The card never goes into the buyer's own wallet.

Turn it on or off

Open your program, go to the Setup tab and find the switch Can be bought as a gift. It is on by default. Switch it off if you don't want the program sold as a gift.

Recurring memberships can never be gifted (you'll see Recurring memberships can't be gifted).

Online: on your card's buy page

On the buy page, the customer ticks This is a gift and fills in:

  • Who is it for?: Their name and Their email
  • From: Your name (shown to them) and Your email (for the receipt)
  • Message (optional)
  • When should it arrive?: Send now or On a date, with a Date and Time

They then pay with the button Buy gift, which shows the price. Online, only bundles and store credit paid once can be gifted.

At the counter

Open Customers, click Invite customer, pick the program and tick This is a gift. Fill in the same details (Who is it for?, Who is it from?, Message (optional), When should it arrive?) and click Send gift. Take payment the way you normally do. At the counter you can sell bundles, store credit and memberships, except recurring memberships.

Staff need edit rights to sell or change gifts. Viewers can see the gift panel but can't change anything.

What if they already have the card?

Store credit and bundles are added to the card the person already holds. A membership with an end date is extended.

Fix a typo or change the date

Open the person's page in Customers. The Gift panel shows where the gift stands: Scheduled, Sent, Opened or In wallet. Use:

  • Change email or date: fix a wrong address or move the delivery. When you change the email, the old link stops working and the new address gets a fresh one.
  • Send again: send the email once more.
  • Send now: send a scheduled gift right away instead of waiting for the date.

Once the person has opened the gift, it can't be changed.

In the customers list, a person whose gift hasn't been emailed yet shows Gift · arrives followed by the date. Once the email has gone out, it changes to Gift · sent.

Refunds

A full refund of an online gift before it is sent cancels it, and the email never goes out. A partial refund before it is sent still sends the gift, with what's left of the value. If the buyer disputes the payment with their bank before the gift is sent, the gift is cancelled. After the gift is sent, your normal refund rules apply.

What the cashier sees

When staff scan the person's card, the scan result shows 🎁 Gift from followed by the buyer's name, so everyone knows who it came from.
