Data collection
Decide what information to collect when customers sign up. Less is more - asking for too much information will discourage people from joining.
Ask customers for their details
On the create screen, under Ask customers for their details, tick what the sign-up form asks for. Every ticked detail is a required box. The less you ask, the more people sign up.
- First name - used to greet them ("Hi Nelia!")
- Last name - to tell apart customers with the same first name (ticking it also ticks First name)
- Email - needed to send offers and recognise returning customers
- Phone
- Birthday - needed for the birthday treat
Every card starts with First name, Last name and Email ticked. Untick Last name for the shortest form, though customers with the same first name are then harder to tell apart. Switch the whole form off and customers add the card with no form.
Add your own questions
You add your own questions later, under Setup → Sign-up info. On Loyalty, bookings + app they are part of the Know your customers pack; on the earlier plans they come with Multi-Location and Groups & Brands.
- Question types: Multiple choice, single choice, or text answers
- Why this matters: Answers automatically create customer groups you can target with specific offers
- Show it at the counter: tick Show to staff when scanning on a question and the answer appears in the scanner app when staff scan that customer's card, for example a licence plate for a car-wash membership
Examples that work well:
- Coffee shop: "How do you like your coffee?" (Hot, Iced, Either)
- Salon: "What services interest you most?" (Hair, Nails, Skin care)
- Restaurant: "Any dietary restrictions?" (None, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free)
Everyone who answers "Vegetarian" becomes part of a "Vegetarian" customer segment. Later, you can send vegetarian-specific promotions just to them.
Start simple: Begin with just email and one custom question. You can always add more fields later.
